Pirogues are small, flat-hulled boat of a design for Cajuns of the Louisiana marsh. These boats are light and small enough to be easily taken onto land. The design also allows the boat to be easily turned over to drain any water that may get into the boat. It's main propuslsion is by paddle or push pole, some have air cooled engines and some even have what are known as "mud motors". These are small flat hulled boats used by Cajuns of the Louisiana marsh to travel through small ponds and bayous for fishing and hunting. South Louisiana has many types and styles of these boats ranging from 10 to 14 feet . There are many builders of these wooden boats, each with his own style and method.
Many are made of wood mostly marine plywood, but some are also made of aluminum and fiberglass which are lightweight materials so they can be carried just about anywhere they are to be used, which is mostly duck hunting.Although they are lightweight they can carry a good load of guns, dogs, decoys and the hunter to and from his blind.
They are also Pirogue races held throughout South Louisiana which attract many visitors and competitors. There are many classes in which to compete, racing pirogues and work pirogues for men.Work pirogues for men, women and teenagers.
